The children at Assumption Senior Girls N.S, participate in the Green Schools Programme. This is an environmental management and award initiative. It promotes long-term, whole-school action for the environment. Green Schools is a student-led programme with involvement from the wider community. The programme is operated and coordinated by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce (FEE member for Ireland).
Our Green Schools Committee was re-established in the spring of 2023 and the students felt our first flag ‘Litter and Waste’ required renewed awareness and education. The Green Schools Committee chose an initiative that rewarded the class with the highest bin standards each week. The competition was fierce and it really helped us get back to basics for the last term.
The school is working on increasing awareness about the benefits of travelling by bike. 6th class participated in a cycling programme sponsored by An Taisce. Over six weeks the children clocked up six hours of cycling safety and helped gain confidence in using their bikes. Some children even began cycling to school again after this course. We have a sheltered bike rack near the front gate where staff and pupils can lock their bikes.
Our school was the site of Bike Library launch in the spring and we were fortunate to be chosen as a base school. Parents and guardians were able to rent bikes for free from the Bike Library and keep them for a term. The aim of this programme and our An Taisce cycling course was to raise awareness on the benefits of cycling and hopefully reduce car traffic outside our school in the morning. Reducing car traffic would help improve the air quality near our school in the mornings.
The students also collaborated with a local environmental group in reducing litter in the community and helped pick litter near our school.
Our school is currently working towards our 8th Flag Global Citizenship and Marine Life and we are on track to receive it next year. All classes participated in activities for Marine week this year.
